You can't afford to have star guys going through arbitration, and you definitely can't afford to resign them as free agents. When you have an elite prospect either sign them to a long-term deal before they have played their first full MLB season or be prepared to trade them away after they have played their third. You can sign a guy if they're cheap but otherwise you need to avoid free agency. That's about where I'm at, any tips would be great. So basically I need tips on how to run an effective team with a cheap owner. Will often reduce scouting, and development budgets too. I had Signed some big free agents, tried to make a real run at it and had a year of 86 wins, not great, but something to build upon for an expansion team. Team started with maximum fan interest, and the owner steadily increased the budget every year with my improved results for about 3 years. Started an expansion save as Montreal Expos.
